Start Half

The first ever meeting in Wigan between these two sides has ended all square. Gary Caldwell's powerful header from a corner gave Wigan the lead mid-way through the first half, but from then on it was mostly Southampton. Just after the hour mark Lambert grabbed an equaliser, and Mauricio Pochettino's men thought they had won it when Schneiderlin gave them the lead following superb work from the excellent Rodriguez. But it wasn't to be - in the final minute of normal time, Maloney was on hand to finish Scharner's knock down and level the game. Southampton may feel they should have won it, but Wigan showed real spirit and will be happy with their point.
Both teams throw everything they have at each other for the last couple of minutes, but neither can find a winner. Full time; Wigan Athletic 2 - 2 Southampton.
Three minutes.
Wigan score again from a corner. Scharner gets up well, and his looping header lands at the feet of Maloney at the back post, who finishes neatly.
Wigan back in it. Wigan Athletic 2 - 2 Southampton.
Southampton score a superb goal on the break. One moment they are defending a corner, and sixteen seconds later Schneiderlin has the ball in the back of the net. Rodriguez runs the entire length of the pitch, outpaces McManaman, gets past another and squares for Morgan Schneiderlin to tuck into an empty net. Great goal for the Saints.
Southampton come from behind. Wigan Athletic 1 - 2 Southampton.
Jay Rodriguez has put in a really good performance today. He seems to have more confidence, and is working hard for the team, as he gets back to clear a corner.
James Ward-Prowse on for Jason Puncheon.
Wigan have their first chance for a while. They break fast, Di Santo leaving Jack Cork in his wake, and sending in a cross with the outside of his boot, but McArthur can't quite send it goalwards.
Southampton are totally on top at the moment. Lambert runs into the channel and manages to pull back for Puncheon, who isn't quite sure what to do, and sort of hits it with both feet. Goes wide.
What a ball from Shaw. He finds Lambert at the back post, who has time and space to set himself for the volley, but it flies agonisingly across the face of the goal.
A bit of pinball in the box, Wigan can't clear, and Lallana steals the ball off the toe of Yoshida, turns and hits the post. Wigan are able to clear the rebound. Frantic defending from Wigan.
That goal seems to have revitalised Wigan. There now seems more urgency about their play, and they are starting to play more like the home side, searching to regain their lead!
Jack Cork out on the right, whips in a cross which Jay Rodriguez challenges for. His header looks to be Al Habsi's ball, but Lambert bravely gets his head in first, and tucks it past the keeper. Game on.
Lambert heads home. Wigan Athletic 1 - 1 Southampton
Adam Lallana comes on for Nathaniel Clyne.
An early ball from Cork, finds Lambert in space. Some quick feet from the big man leaves his marker on the floor, and he squares it for Puncheon who gets it all wrong and the ball dribbles clear.
It looks like a back four for Wigan, as Martinez looks to hold onto his lead.
Jordi Gomez replaces Ronnie Stam.
Lambert takes a tumble in the box, with the Southampton fans screaming for a penalty. Stam looked to have his arm around the striker, but the ref is not interested.
Jack Cork picks up a booking for a late challenge on Roger Espinoza.
Wigan seem like they may be setting their stall out to defend, with every man back in their own half, allowing the Southampton defenders possession of the ball.
Rickie Lambert looks destined to meet Cork's cross, but Paul Scharner gets just enough contact on the ball to deflect it away from the Saints striker.
Southampton start the second half.
Gaston Ramirez is unable to shake the dead leg he picked up in the first half, and is replaced by Steven Davis.
Southampton are unlucky to go in at half time one down. The southerners have had the majority of the play and the chances, but Wigan have nicked a goal and are defending solidly. The goal came from a Wigan corner, as some slack marking allowed skipper Gary Caldwell a free-header to give the home side the lead. Southampton's best chance of an equaliser was a freak deflection from a Wigan clearance, which almost caught out Al Habsi. Saints will want more of the same in the second half, but you would hope Wigan are able to offer a little more.
The referee ends the first half. Wigan Athletic 1 - 0 Southampton.
Rickie Lambert is showing off his creative side, as he floats a lovely ball in towards Rodriguez, but Wigan are able to hack it clear.
Southampton are finishing the half very strongly. One superb diagonal pass from Ramirez rips the Wigan defence apart, but Rodriguez cannot deliver.
Gaston Ramirez takes a bit of a knock following a clash with Roger Espinoza, but after treatment, looks like he should be okay to continue.
Luke Shaws shows good pace to get past his man, and cuts the ball back towards Lambert, who takes a bit of an air shot. A follow-up effort seems to strike the arms of Caldwell, but the ref says not.
Jos Hooiveld meets a corner with a glancing header that looks destined for the corner, only for it to curl just wide at the last moment. Close.
Most of Wigan's best play is coming down their left, through Jean Beausejour. The Chilean is having a very good game.
Beausejour and Maloney exchange passes to free Maloney in the box. He skips past one and gets to the byline, but Boruc is out very quickly to close.
Jay Rodriguez picks up the first yellow card of the game. Rodriguez is perhaps a little unlucky, as he wins the ball, but he took a lot of Beausejour as well.
Southampton almost hit back immediately with a freak effort. Fourteen seconds after the restart, a Wigan clearance clatters into Morgan Schneiderlin and almost loops back over the head of Ali Al Habsi, who makes a great save to tip wide for a corner.
A fantastic header from Gary Caldwell. Jean Beausejour's corner finds an unmarked Caldwell on the penalty spot, and from a standing start, he generates enough power to beat Boruc with a downward header into the corner.
Gary Caldwell heads home. Wigan Athletic 1 - 0 Southampton.
Most of Saints' attacking play is coming down the left, with Shaw and Puncheon combining well. Shaw shows some quick feet to buy himself some space, but his pass is just too long for Puncheon.
Southampton are probably playing the most fluid football so far, but Wigan are doing what Wigan do, chasing every ball down and attacking with pace when they have the opportunity. Could be in for a good game here.
What a chance for Ramirez. He times his run to perfection, beats the offside trap and is completely on his own in the box, but hesitates and misses the target. Great ball from Lambert.
A devastating cross from Jean Beausejour out on the left, and Di Santo wants it more than the defender, only for Boruc to pull off a terrific save. The Wigan man must have thought he had scored.
Ronnie Stam whips in a cross, which is cleared for a corner by Luke Shaw. Maloney takes the corner, but Rodriguez is back to clear.
Morgan Schneiderlin has the first shot of the game, but from 35 yards it is a little optimistic and it flies over the bar.
Southampton start with: Artur Boruc, Nathaniel Clyne, Maya Yoshida, Jos Hooiveld, Luke Shaw, Morgan Schneiderlin, Jack Cork, Jason Puncheon, Gaston Ramirez, Jay Rodriguez, Rickie Lambert. Subs: Kelvin Davis, Daniel Fox, Frazer Richardson, James Ward-Prowse, Steven Davis, Adam Lallana, Tadanari Lee.
Wigan start with: Ali Al Habsi, Paul Scharner, Gary Caldwell, Maynor Figueroa, Ronnie Stam, Roger Espinoza, James McCarthy, James McArthur, Jean Beausejour, Shaun Maloney, Franco Di Santo. Subs: Joel, Roman Golobart, Eduard Campabadal, Jordi Gomez, David Jones, Callum McManaman, Angelo Henriquez.
The referee gets the game underway.
The game will be refereed by Andre Marriner, who is one of only two top flight ref's yet to issue a red card this season, the other being Lee Mason. In his 23 games so far he has averaged just over three yellow cards a match – a total of 70.
Southampton's midweek loss to a Wayne Rooney double was their first in seven, but had drawn five of the six before that. They made Manchester United work hard for that victory, and new coach Pochettino will be looking for his side to turn their impressive recent performances into a victory – his first since replacing Adkins.
Wigan have not won in the Premier League since beating Aston Villa in December, that being their only victory in eleven league games.A battling draw against Stoke in midweek ended January with two points from twelve for the Latics.
Club captain Adam Lallana made his first appearance in almost two months at Old Trafford, and could be handed a start, along with new signing Forren. Jose Fonte and Guly Do Prado will both miss the match through knee injuries.
Southampton were heavily linked with Philippe Coutinho, but the Brazilian ultimately chose Liverpool. However they did pull of something of a coup, bringing in the highly rated Norway international, Vegard Forren.
Scharner could play make his second debut for Wigan, but Emerson Boyce is doubtful with a hamstring injury, joining Ramis, Alcaraz, Lopez, Pollitt, Watson, Crusat, Miyachi and Fyvie in the treatment room. Mauro Boselli has left the club on loan and Arouna Kone is away at the Africa cup of nations, so Angelo Henriquez could be eyeing up a starting spot.
Roberto Martinez was frustrated in his attempts to bolster his squad, with a reported move for Aiden McGeady falling through. The only new face to arrive on deadline day is an old one; and this face belongs to Paul Scharner, arriving on loan from Hamburg.
A new experience for both Wigan and Southampton at 3pm on Saturday, as the Saints travel to Wigan for the first time ever in a competitive game. At the start of the season both sets of fans may well have expected this fixture to be something of a relegation six-pointer and the league table does little to suggest otherwise. A Wigan victory could see them climb out of the bottom three and move them level on points with Mauricio Pochettino's side. However, a Saints win would see them open a six point gap and leave the Lactics firmly in the relegation mire.
