Start Half

Everton piled on the pressure in a heated second half but couldn't break down spirited Swansea at Goodison Park, the game ending in a 0-0 draw. Both teams played well but chances were few and far between; the first half saw Marouane Fellaini and Leon Osman go close for the hosts while Pablo Hernandez shot narrowly over and Michu had a header tipped onto the bar. After half time it was one-way traffic as the Toffees bombarded the visitors' box. Sylvain Distin and Phil Jagielka headed over from Leighton Baines crosses while Fellaini missed the target from near point-blank range. Ashley Williams and Chico Flores were immense once again, standing firm to keep frustrated Everton out and claim a clean sheet. Neither side should be too unhappy with a hard-earned Premier League point.
The full time whistle rings out and it's a point apiece for Everton and Swansea in a goalless draw.
Steven Pienaar catches Kemy Agustien with a swinging elbow to floor the Swansea man. Phil Dowd gives a free kick but unbelievably keeps his cards in his pocket.
Dwight Tiendalli becomes the second Swansea player to be booked for time-wasting.
Some classic route one-style play from the Toffees sees Apostolos Vellios knock the ball down to Jelavic, who blazes a half-volley over from the edge of the box.
Michel Vorm pulls off a fantastic save to push Fellaini's header around the post, but the ref had already blown for a push by the Belgian. Vorm is booked for time-wasting as he prepares to take the resulting free kick.
The supporters are getting restless now, with some dissenting voices clearly audible. That seems strange considering Everton's excellent season so far.
Apostolos Vellios gets a late run-out in place of Anichebe.
Michael Laudrup makes a change up front, sending Danny Graham on for Michu.
The Swansea defenders are massed inside their own area now as Everton launch wave after wave of attacks. If they can hold out until 90 minutes it'll represent quite an achievement.
That may have been the one big chance. Leighton Baines swings over yet another telling cross, gifting Phil Jagielka a free header from six yards out. The stand-in skipper somehow contrives to plant his effort over the bar. Defender's instinct, perhaps.
De Guzman is back on his feet but the Swans withdraw the lacklustre Hernandez in favour of Wayne Routledge.
Jonathan de Guzman crumples to a heap and is forced to receive treatment on the pitch while the game is stopped.
David Moyes' first change sees Steven Naismith replace Neville, who hands the captain's armband to the worthy Phil Jagielka.
Osman reaches the byline with a display of typically tricky feet and attempts to pull the ball back for a teammate. Chico Flores is having none of it and sweeps the danger away.
Fellaini still looks groggy following his recent lay-off through suspension and hasn't recaptured his superb early-season form just yet. One loose pass from the talisman draws a few hoots from the crowd.
Marouane Fellaini goes mightily close as Coleman's dinked ball falls at his feet inside the six-yard box. Fellaini has his back to goal and can't quite turn quickly enough to get the shot on target.
Michu picks up a yellow card for a late tackle on Osman.
The crowd howl for a penalty as Jelavic appears to be pushed in the back by Williams with the ball falling to the Croatian. Phil Dowd merely shakes his head.
The first booking of the game goes to Hernandez for a stupid and over-vehement reaction to one of Phil Dowd's decisions.
The hosts pile on the pressure as Anichebe sets up Jelavic for an overhead kick that the star striker completely misses. Shortly afterwards Michael Laudrup sends Jonathan de Guzman on for Dyer.
Pablo Hernandez finds some space just outside the Everton box with some fancy footwork and elects to go for goal. The Spaniard's effort carries a degree of power but is too close to Howard.
Sylvain Distin's ball over the top beats the Swansea back line but Fellaini is offside and the visitors reclaim possession.
A Leighton Baines corner from the left finds the head of the leaping Distin, whose thumping header sails over the bar.
Just as they did in the first half, Everton burst out of the blocks. Coleman charges forward and Phil Neville loses Hernandez to receive the pass and force Vorm into a diving save with a blasted 18-yard effort.
The teams are back out and the second half has kicked off. Neither manager has decided to make any switches of personnel at the break. On a side note, the attendance for today's game has been announced as 35,782.
It's been an entertaining half of Barclays Premier League football here at Goodison Park between two impressive teams, but chances have not arrived by the bucketload. Everton had a little more of the play and did go close on two occasions; first when Marouane Fellaini could only sidefoot disappointingly at Michel Vorm from Seamus Coleman's cutback and then again when Leon Osman's back post header bounced narrowly wide. Pablo Hernandez went close for Swansea with a trademark curled effort, and the ever-effective Michu saw an angled lob pushed onto the crossbar by Tim Howard. The Swans are sitting back somewhat and a goal from either side is needed to make the game that bit more open. Let's see what transpires in the second half.
It's half time and for now the game is at a stalemate.
Angel Rangel takes aim from all of 25 yards, the full back's shot dropping comfortably into Howard's waiting arms.
Another cross from the rampant Baines finds its way into the Swansea area, but this time it's too far from goal and Phil Jagielka's header fails to trouble the goalkeeper.
A terrific ball into the box from Baines finds the diminutive Leon Osman, who somehow leaps above the pack at the far post to direct a header back across goal and narrowly wide.
The busy Seamus Coleman manages to hold off Rangel and pull the ball back for Marouane Fellani. The centrally-placed midfielder looks certain to score but instead makes it easy for Vorm with an underpowered side-footer.
Howard pulls off a wonderful save to tip Michu's instant shot onto the crossbar. The Spaniard did brilliantly with an intelligent run and lob that didn't quite come off as he intended. Spain manager Vicente Del Bosque, in the crowd today, will have watched with interest.
As the Toffees power forward on the break Coleman looks to release the motoring Nikica Jelavic, only for Kemy Agustien to step in with a vital interception.
Leighton Baines' diagonal cross finds Fellaini inside the box, the towering Everton man heading the ball down for Victor Anichebe, whose own header is tipped over the bar by Michel Vorm's flailing hand. That was the best chance of the game so far.
Steven Naismith Steven Naismith has been sent out to warm up, with Leon Osman looking like he's taken a slight knock. The midfielder will struggle on for the moment.
A poor touch from Fellaini allows Ben Davies to collect the ball, but the young defender inexplicably gives it straight back to Steven Pienaar. The South African heads straight for goal and unleashes a goalbound shot that deflects off Chico Flores for a corner.
Jelavic controls a high ball on his chest and lays it back to Neville. The Everton skipper tries a quick return ball into the striker's path, only to see it cut out by the ever-aware Ashley Williams.
Pablo Hernandez goes for the curler from the edge of the area, sending his effort high and wide of the top-left corner of Tim Howard's goal. We've seen Hernandez bury them from there.
Nikica Jelavic goes close for Everton with a header that may have been going just wide but which Ashley Williams takes no chances with. Swansea then break through Pablo Hernandez, who could have sent Dyer clean through but for the quality of the Spaniard's final pass.
Following a blistering opening spell the game has entered what should be a brief lull. The crowd refuse to be dragged down however and continue to raise the roof.
Phil Neville finds Seamus Coleman, who in turn picks out Jelavic with a superb through ball. The Croatian cleverly bends his run but is adjudged to have strayed slightly offside.
Angel Rangel takes advantage of Sylvain Distin's poor ball out of defence to slip a pass to Ki Sung-Yueng. The South Korean's return ball looks dangerous but Tim Howard races from his line to deny Rangel.
Nathan Dyer beats the offside trap to control a long ball over the top. The winger is going away from goal and soon finds Phil Jagielka breathing down his neck, the England defender eventually stealing the ball to clear upfield.
The Toffees threaten again as Vorm just about beats Nikica Jelavic to a through ball. The keeper's panicked clearance falls to Victor Anichebe, who can't steer his shot goalwards.
Everton hare out of the blocks as some neat interplay between Steven Pienaar and Marouane Fellani sets the Belgian up for a fierce shot from 18 yards that Michel Vorm does well to hold.
Today's referee Phil Dowd blows the whistle and we're underway here at Goodison Park. Sit tight because this should be a good one.
Leighton Baines has been passed fit to start for Everton, but Kevin Mirallas is nowhere to be seen. Victor Anichebe and Phil Neville have also made the starting line-up. Michael Laudrup has left Jonathan de Guzman and Danny Graham on the bench for Swansea, with Nathan Dyer and Kemy Agustien returning to the team.
The injury-stricken Neil Taylor is the only confirmed absentee for Swansea, who may rest Leon Britton.
Kevin Mirallas is fit again and could make an appearance after recovering from a troublesome hamstring injury, while Leighton Baines is struggling with an ankle problem. Darron Gibson and Tony Hibbert remain on the treatment table.
The hosts' only weakness of late has been in defence, so Michu could be the man to make all the difference this afternoon at Goodison Park. The revelatory Spaniard has dropped down the Premier League top scorers' rankings in recent weeks and now occupies joint-third spot with Demba Ba. He'll want to force his way back up those rankings with more goals today.
Danny Graham looks to be on his way out of the Liberty Stadium despite a resurgent recent spell in which the Swans' second-choice striker has scored four goals in four games. Norwich, QPR and Sunderland are all in the frame to sign the £5.5million-rated 27-year-old, with the physically imposing Kenwyne Jones a surprising target for Michael Laudrup.
Promising young midfielder Ross Barkley has been sent out on loan to Leeds United until 12th February. The prodigiously talented 19-year-old has struggled to make the first team this season with Everton's senior stars performing so well, and makes his second move of the campaign after a successful spell at Sheffield Wednesday.
It could be bad news for prime offender Marouane Fellaini as Phil Dowd has been selected to preside over this afternoon's engagement. Mr Dowd has brandished 38 yellow and two red cards in his 14 Premier League games this season and will have his beady eye on the bullish Belgian. Chico Flores might want to watch those tasty tackles as well.
These are good times to be a supporter of either Everton or Swansea City, two teams of modest means who are enjoying terrific seasons. The Toffees are flying high in fifth place in the Barclays Premier League following an uncharacteristically excellent start to the campaign; this is the time of year when David Moyes' side usually click into gear, so we may have yet to see what they're truly capable of. The Swans come fresh off the back of an excellent victory over Chelsea in their midweek Capital One Cup semi-final first leg and will be flush with confidence. Michael Laudrup has somehow made Brendan Rodgers' skilful side even better, and the team can now mix it up with both intricate passing and direct attacks, as can the hosts. This could turn out to be a real cracker.
