Start Half

Everton have taken the three points today, and you can't say that they didn't deserve it. The home side were much better in the first half but could not find their way through a stubborn Spurs defence. Spurs had chances themselves, but looked tired after their European exertions in midweek. The second half was in danger of both boiling over due to some rash challenges, alongside slowing down due to some poor play. However Spurs took the lead when Clint Dempsey's effort was deflected in by Sylvain Distin. It looked as if Spurs were going to scrape an undeserved win, but Everton fought back with two late, late goals from Steven Pienaar and Nikica Jelavic. A great result for the Toffees, but another frustrating game for Spurs. The fact continues - if football was 80 minutes, not 90 minutes long, then Spurs would be top. Final score Everton 2, Spurs 1.
The referee blows the whistle on what has been a fascinating game. Everton 2, Tottenham Hotspur 1.
88 seconds was all it took for Everton to turn this game around. Spurs look deflated, and you can understand why.
Nikica Jelavic receives a hero's send-off as John Heitinga comes on for the last few seconds.
Spurs didn't even have time to catch their breath. Seamus Coleman sends a cross from deep on the right, and Apostolos Vellios tries the overhead kick. The ball doesn't go anywhere near the goal, but falls into the path of Nikica Jelavic, who pokes home. Wow.
EVERTON TAKE THE LEAD!!!!
You can't say they don't deserve this. Everton throw everyone forward and Steven Naismith finds the overlapping Seamus Coleman. The Irishman measures his cross and finds the head of Steven Pienaar, who powers home from 14 yards. Everton 1, Spurs 1.
WITH FIVE SECONDS OF NORMAL TIME LEFT, EVERTON LEVEL!!!
Jan Vertonghen has been a constant threat for Spurs in the last few moments, making his way up and down the left flank like a steam train. The man has an incredible engine on him.
Iago takes the place of the below-par Jermain Defoe.
Gylfi Sigurdsson is unlucky here. Jan Vertonghen cuts in from the left and plays the ball across the face of goal, where Sigurdsson's looping effort cannons back off the bar.
Everton have been the better side throughout this game, but are behind here. They have just over five minutes to find a goal, or maybe even two.
Apostolos Vellios has come on to give Everton a bit more attacking power, with Leon Osman leaving the field.
Everton don't deserve to be behind here, and they need to pull something out of the hat to get back into this.
Gylfi Sigurdsson comes on to the field in the place of Moussa Dembele.
Well, I didn't see this coming. Tom Huddlestone brings the ball down and plays it to Clint Dempsey, who turns and shoots from 25 yards. Normally his effort would be saved by Tim Howard, but the ball takes an unfortunate nick off Sylvain Distin and loops into the net. Everton 0, Tottenham Hotspur 1.
SPURS TAKE THE LEAD!!!!
Everton play the ball around nicely in the Spurs third and Leon Osman tries a shot, which Hugo Lloris can only parry. However the save is better than it looks as Lloris turned the ball away from Jelavic, who was prowling.
Aaron Lennon leaves the field, with the afro-haired Tom Huddlestone coming on in his place.
Kyle Walker does well here, biding his time and drawing the foul from Leon Osman, who is then booked.
This game needs substitutions, as the players on the pitch just aren't getting it done.
Everton have had 13 chances on goal, compared to Tottenham's seven. With that amount of chances, how have we not had one that counts?
Every time either side attacks, they give the ball away with a poor pass or some miscontrol, allowing the defence to clear. Neither manager seems very happy.
The game really has gone flat in the last few moments. Would it be too much to ask for a goal?
The ball is being knocked around, albeit slowly, in the middle of the pitch. Neither side is showing much impetus to press forward.
The game has gone stale in the last few moments. The fans are trying their hardest to encourage the players, but you can't help but feel that some substitutions would improve this tie.
Darron Gibson clips Clint Dempsey on the edge of the box and Tim Howard has to pull off a great stop to prevent Jan Vertonghen's free kick creeping in.
Everton are very good at keeping the ball to themselves and not giving it away. They just need to build on their possession and find a platform to work off.
The hosts are continuing this half as they ended the first, constantly pressuring the Spurs goal. The away side need to do something to get themselves into this game.
Leighton Baines fires the free kick straight into the wall, but his pass to Steven Naismith sees the Scotsman fire wide from only a foot out.
Sandro slides in late on Leon Osman , giving Everton a chance on the edge of the area.
Tottenham start the second period.
Kevin Mirallas has left the field, with Steven Naismith joining the action.
Both sides have played their part in a good game of football here, with Everton looking the more likely to take the lead. The hosts have had more chances, looked brighter and have even had penalty appeals. However, they have not been able to find their way through a stubborn Spurs defence, and there's more to come from this one yet.
The referee ends a pulsating half of football.
One minute is signalled as injury time, and Everton are pressing hard.
Twice in quick succession, Everton appeal for a penalty with the ball appearing to strike both Steven Caulker and William Gallas on the arm. They may have a point, you know.
Leighton Baines is the next man to be booked for a late, hard challenge on Aaron Lennon.
The game has degenerated into a battle, with tackles flying in all over the pitch. The good quality play from earlier has disappeared to be replaced by niggly fouls.
There have been some interesting tackles in the last few moments. First off, Moussa Dembele is practically wrestled to the ground by Marouane Fellaini, before Jan Vertonghen is booked for an elbow on Seamus Coleman.
Jermain Defoe is shown the yellow card for dissent.
Everton are keeping the ball nicely, playing it around the pitch and making Spurs chase them. It seems to be working so far, as the home side have looked the better side for much of this half.
Both sides are utilising the midfields well, especially the wide-men, and the defences are on their toes keeping them at bay.
The supporters are making this fixture enjoyable. Every break is being rewarded with cheers and roars, and you wouldn't expect anything less from Goodison Park.
Spurs are playing some good football here, moving it around nicely, but their final ball is lacking. Emmanuel Adebayor would have been clear through on goal were it not for a poor pass from Clint Dempsey.
Now Spurs are taking their turn to attack. This game has had plenty of excitement but no real efforts on goal so far.
Nikica Jelavic breaks down the left and does well to cut the ball back, but Leon Osman can't reach it. Moments later, Kevin Mirallas' ball across the box is robbed off the toe of Jelavic by William Gallas.
Clint Dempsey is tripped by Darron Gibson on the edge of the area and after a short delay, the American bends a free kick round the wall. After a bobble, Tim Howard smothers the ball.
After a blistering start, Everton are being slowly pegged back by Spurs. There's a goal coming soon, I'm sure, I just can't predict which way it will go.
That 'keeping by Hugo Lloris a moment ago was superb. The Frenchman made himself big and rushed out of his goal to take it from the feet of Jelavic. The Everton fans shouted for a penalty, but the referee was in a great position.
Moussa Dembele tries a shot from distance which is smothered easily by Tim Howard. Minutes later, Nikica Jelavic breaks free on goal and only some smart 'keeping by Hugo Lloris prevents them taking the lead.
The hosts are pressing with intent here. Kevin Mirallas tries a cross-field ball with the intention of picking out Jelavic, but William Gallas does superbly to block.
Darron Gibson picks out Seamus Coleman wide on the right and the defender's cross is turned away by Hugo Lloris before Nikica Jelavic can get there.
Everton have started brightly and are forcing Spurs backwards. The home fans are in good voice and are urging their team forward.
Everton start the game, kicking from right to left.
Spurs make several changes to the side that won in Europe on Thursday. Hugo Lloris starts in goal ahead of Brad Friedel, whilst William Gallas takes Kyle Naughton's place in defence. Moussa Dembele comes in to the midfield instead of Tom Carroll, whilst Emmanuel Adebayor keeps his place up front with Jermain Defoe.
Seamus Coleman and Kevin Mirallas do indeed return to the side, with Tony Hibbert and Steven Naismith dropping out. The Toffees seem to be moving to a 4-4-1-1 formation, with Marouane Fellaini supporting Nikica Jelavic.
Just three places and three points seperate the two teams, although an Everton victory today would see them leapfrog Spurs due to a better goal difference. The hosts are in average form, having lost only one of their last five, but only having won one of those as well. Spurs are in much better form, having won four of their last five with one draw. That includes a mid-week victory over Panathiniakos in the Europa League. However, Spurs have not won at Goodison Park in five attempts, since February 2007, and Everton are unbeaten in their last 11 fixtures at home. We're in for a cracker today, I can feel it.
Both Gareth Bale and Michael Dawson picked up hamstring injuries against Fulham last weekend and are extremely doubtful, causing a selection headache for Andre Villas-Boas. Gylfi Sigurdsson or Emmanuel Adebayor could start in Bale's place, meaning a change of formation, whilst William Gallas is likely to start ahead of Dawson. Younes Kaboul, Scott Parker and Benoit Assou-Ekotto are all out, but the latter two could return next weekend against Swansea.
The hosts could welcome Kevin Mirallas and Seamus Coleman back into the squad for the visit of Spurs, although it seems unlikely that either will start. Philip Neville and Victor Anichebe are on the long-term injury list and won't feature, whilst Thomas Hitzlsperger could make an appearance to further strengthen his claim for a long-term contract.
Hello and welcome to this afternoon's game between Everton and Spurs. Despite it not being the most high-profile game of the day, this fixture could certainly provide plenty of quality and excitement. Stay tuned for team news and stats.
