Start Half

Aston Villa were held to a 0-0 draw by a resilient Stoke City side on Saturday afternoon at Villa Park. Orchestrated brilliantly by Bannan and Westwood, Paul Lambert's men started the brighter and certainly had their chances to close off the game. Stokes defence, however, never let up and were led brilliantly by Robert Huth and Ryan Shawcross at centre half all game. Tony Pulis will be happy with the point after his side's slow start to the game that handed Villa possession and territorial dominance late on. A second yellow saw for Shotton saw he sim red late on, but Stoke refused to give in despite a late surge from Villa in injury time. Goalless at Villa Park, on a cold winter's afternoon in the Midlands.

Shotton winds up a big throw-in for Stoke, but it's dealt with well by Villa as Lichaj eventually clears.
Cameron blocks Benteke's latest shot superbly as Jones breaks for Stoke. Great defence again from Pulis's men.
Score remains 0-0 as we approach the hour mark.
Guzan squares up to Jones as he follows through on the Villa keeper. East looks to quieten things down.
Nzonzi fouls right in front of the ref as things begin to heat up here at Villa Park.
Villa almost take advantage of some woeful defending from Stoke. Pulis's men are hanging on here.
Fantastic cover by Whitehead stops Lowton who continues to be a threat down the right flank.
Another fantastic ball by Bannan puts Benteke in again but it's saved well by Begovic. Best chance of the game.
0-0 at the break with Villa in full control of the game so far.
East signals the start of the second half as play gets underway again at Villa Park.
Villa are in full control at half time and will be annoyed to go into the break without a goal. Stoke had only 25% possession in the first period. Pulis will be sure to have a few words to say at half time.
One minute of added time in this first half

The game's referee is Roger East, whose previous Barclays Premier League game saw him take charge of Liverpool's 1-0 win over Reading on 20th November.
Begovic, Cameron, Shawcross, Huth, Shotton, Whelan, N'Zonzi, Ethrington, Whitehead, Jones, Walters.
Peter Crouch makes his place on the bench on his return to his old club after picking up a facial injury against Newcastle midweek. Michael Owen is rested once again with a hamstring problem, and Charlie Adam is made unavailable with a one-match suspension.
More of the same is required from Tony Pulis's side, as they look to build on their fantastic recent run of form that has taken them to ninth in the table after three wins on the trot.
Guzan, Lowton, Baker, Clark, Lichaj, Holman, Westwood, Bannan, Herd, Agbonlahor, Benteke.
Darren Bent is included in the match day squad but he sits out another game on the bench, with Lambert favouring the form of Belgium's Benteke of late. Clark and Baker are handed another chance to impress at centre back, as Dunne and Vlaar continue to recover from their respective injuries.
Villa will look to continue their new found form that has seen them take five points from their last three games against stiff opposition. Pressure does, however, continue to mount on Lambert's side, as they look to break into the top half of the table as we approach the New Year.
Aston Villa welcome a jubilant Stoke City side on Saturday afternoon who have won their last three games in succession, as they continue to push for a European spot in the Barclays Premier League. For Paul Lambert's side, Saturday's game marks another must win home match, as they look to widen the gap between themselves and the relegation zone. With five of the last seven meetings between these teams ending in draws, don't expect this match to become a one-sided affair for either side.
