Start Half

The final whistle goes and Roberto Martinez is delighted to have secured his side's first win of the season. The visitors were second best for much of the first half, but came out firing after the break and goals from Di Santo and Kone have resulted in the three points. Nigel Adkins will rue a wasteful first half, with Lallana hitting the bar and Lambert seeing a header aimed straight at Al Habsi. Premier League football might have returned to St Mary's, but it's been a harsh lesson of clinical finishing from the visitors. It's finished Southampton 0-2 Wigan.
It might not have given Southampton a share of the spoils, but Jose Fonte has managed to miss a clear cut opportunity from four yards out. One final cross is delivered from Lallana, and amid the panic in the Wigan defence, Fonte knocks the ball wide of goal.
Southampton look to grab a consolation, but Lallana's corner is cleared by Ramis and the hosts appear to have run out of ideas.
Three minutes added on and Roberto Martinez looks to eat up some of the time by bringing on Mauro Boselli to give Arouna Kone a standing reception from the visiting fans.
Wigan have grabbed a second and it's Arouna Kone with the crucial finish. The striker hasn't had much to work with all afternoon, but takes the ball off Jos Hooiveld and knocks his shot past the outrushing goalkeeper into the back of the net. Fans are beginning to leave St Mary's and it's Southampton 0-2 Wigan.
The hosts are playing with a real urgency and again it's Lallana who attempts to beat Al Habsi with a low drive. Ali Al Habsi should collect the ball, but instead knocks it behind for a corner to the frustration of Roberto Martinez. Fortunately the delivery from Lallana is poor and Wigan can clear.
The visitors have a big chance to secure the three points. Kone is played in by McCarthy and unmarked as he bears down on goal. His shot beats Davis, but also beats the post and goes wide. Relief for Southampton fans, who would have felt a second goal would have ended any chance of claiming at least a point.
Southampton will feel they should be level. A cross is played in by Fonte and Jos Hooiveld gets his head to it. Fortunately for Wigan, the header is over the crossbar and Al Habsi can collect for a goal kick.
A double change from the hosts. Steven Davis and Jay Rodriguez make way, with Billy Sharp and James Ward-Prowse coming on. Roberto Martinez also responds, with Shaun Maloney being replaced by Jean Beausejour.
Wigan have taken a firm control of this game and are looking to grab a crucial second. Emmerson Boyce crosses into the path of Kone, but the striker can't get a touch to it and the chance has gone.
Kone has seen little of the ball this afternoon, but his first effort on goal forces a good save from Kelvin Davis and earns a corner. Maloney delivers and Gomez gets a touch at close range towards goal, but the keeper is again equal to it and Southampton can look to clear.
The home fans are giving Nigel Adkins nervous glances, as they appear to be simply awaiting the manager to make a change. Wigan are looking comfortable and with Gomez in the middle, they are able to stem the supply line to Lallana.
Jordi Gomez is on for Wigan in place of the goalscorer Di Santo. Roberto Martinez appears to be looking for more bodies in midfield, no doubt anticipating that the hosts will begin to throw more players forward.
Rickie Lambert is unmarked on the edge of the Wigan penalty area and blasts a low drive towards goal. Ali Al Habsi dives to his left and knocks the ball behind for a corner. Fox then delivers the ball into the path of Lallana, but his volley is high and wide.
Southampton are looking short of ideas having gone behind at St Mary's. Adkins has options on the bench, with both Jason Puncheon and Billy Sharp undertaking intensive warm up routines.
Adam Lallana clips Maynor Figueroa, and the referee tries to play advantage. Di Santo is reluctant to take the ball forward, and the official has no choice but to instead blow for a free kick to the dismay of the Southampton fans.
Almost an equaliser for Southampton. Another corner is whipped in by Lallana, and Fox is there to drive a shot towards goal. Al Habsi is equal to it and parries the ball clear of danger.
Wigan are putting the pressure on as they look for a second goal. Another shot by Figueroa is parried away by Davis, and Kone is unlucky not to make any contact with the rebound. Nigel Adkins looks on as he ponders a change of tactics, having kept only Rickie Lambert up front for this half.
First goal of the game and it's gone to the visitors. Shaun Maloney brings the ball forward and plays in Di Santo. The striker has time in the penalty to pick his spot, and blasts the ball into the roof of the net. Roberto Martinez will be delighted and it's Southampton 0-1 Wigan.
First shot on target in the second half and it falls to the visitors. Maynor Figueroa drives forward, and his shot is saved by Davis. The visitors have certainly started the second half the better are are now looking the most dangerous of the two teams.
The referee gets the second half underway, as we await the opening goal at St Mary's.
Anthony Taylor blows his whistle to warm applause from both sets of supporters at St Mary's. The hosts have undoubtedly had the better of the chances, with Ali Al Habsi tipping over a Lallana effort. Nigel Adkins will be the happier of the two managers, but his side have failed to capitalise and it's Southampton 0-0 Wigan.
The visitors break and Di Santo is drifting in from the right wing. He attempts to cross the ball into the area, but it almost turns into a shot that drifts just wide of goal.
Again the hosts press forward in numbers, but this time Rickie Lambert finds Lallana on the edge of the area, and his shot is straight into the arms of Al Habsi.
Adam Lallana again crosses the ball into the Wigan box, and again it's dealt with by the visiting defence. Southampton have looked to play everything through the midfielder, and he's certainly showcasing his abilities this afternoon. If Southampton are to find a breakthrough, you can expect this player to be at the heart of it.
Maynor Figueroa has space on the edge of the Southampton penalty area and his shot is blocked by Kelvin Davis for a corner. Maloney whips the ball into the path of James McArthur, who also sees his shot blocked by Fonte.
The referee causes frustration amongst the Southampton fans by blowing for a foul by Guly when the hosts appeared to have players forward in numbers on the counter. Nigel Adkins won't be happy with that, but can't fault the way his side have gone about their task in the opening half hour.
Both sides are trying to keep the ball on the floor, and it's the hosts who remain on the front foot. Daniel Fox sees another shot blocked by Ramis, and Wigan can look to break.
Another corner for the hosts. Daniel Fox delivers a cross into the area, but Maloney clears the ball straight back into the path of Steven Davis. His pass finds Lallana, who again sees a shot blocked by a sea of blue shirts.
Wigan are starting to get more players behind the ball and frustrating the hosts. Jay Rodriguez bundles over Gary Caldwell and the defender looks like he needs treatment. It's a break in play for both managers to have a quick word with their players as they look to find a breakthrough.
The Saints continue to press forward and the ball is played through to Rickie Lambert. His header is on target, but straight into the arms of the Wigan goalkeeper.
Best chance of the game from Southampton. Adam Lallana has space on the edge of the penalty area and his right foot shot is tipped onto the crossbar by Ali Al Habsi and out for a corner. It was a tremendous strike from Lallana and it was a top notch save to stop the hosts taking the lead.
The visitors are beginning to get a foothold in the game. Maynor Figueroa crosses a tempting ball into the penalty area, but neither Arouna Kone or Franco Di Santo can get a touch to it and the Saints clear.
Southampton are looking the sharper of the two sides and it's Guly who attempts to score from long range. Emmerson Boyce blocks the shot and the visitors can clear. Roberto Martinez is urging his side to keep the ball, as it's the hosts who are controlling the tempo at St Mary's.
First shot of the game and it's the hosts on the front foot. Jay Rodriguez finds space in the Wigan penalty area, but his effort is blocked by Alcaraz for a corner. Fox whips it towards goal, but the visitors are able to clear.
The hosts have settled quickly and are looking to press forward early on. Rickie Lambert is fouled by James McCarthy, and the hosts have another chance to cause trouble from a set piece.
Southampton win a free kick in the Wigan half. Adam Lallana whips the ball into the penalty area, but Gary Caldwell is able to clear for the visitors. The hosts appear to be leaving Rickie Lambert up front on his own, with Jay Rodriguez drifting to the wings.
Southampton get the game underway at St Mary's. Nigel Adkins is all smiles as he shakes hands with Roberto Martinez. The Saints manager celebrates his 100th game in charge, and will want to mark the occasion with a win.
Roberto Martinez makes one enforced change from the defeat to Chelsea. Arouna Kone gets his first start in place of the recently departed Victor Moses.
Nigel Adkins makes two changes from the side beaten at Man City last time out. Steven Davis and Rickie Lambert both come into the side, with James Ward-Prowse and Jason Puncheon making way.
Nigel Adkins has options in front of goal, with Rickie Lambert grabbing his first goal of the campaign last week at Man City. If the manager chooses to start him, then expect the hosts to try and supply chances to the hitman at the earliest opportunity. Wigan's latest signing Arouna Kone has arrived with a goal grabbing reputation from Levante, and the visitors will certainly be hoping he can help fill the void left by Victor Moses leaving the club yesterday.
Wigan might have lost to Chelsea last time out, but Roberto Martinez's side matched the Champions of Europe for long periods of the game, and had they not conceded two goals in the opening ten minutes then they could have grabbed a share of the spoils. The Wigan manager will be demanding more focus from his side and more clinical finishing in an effort to secure a first victory of the season.
Southampton's march back to the Premier League was mainly thanks to their home form, with 16 home wins being the most for any side in the Championship. Nigel Adkins knows a home win today could mark a signal of intent for the upcoming months, but that a defeat could cause concerns amongst the fanbase that the squad is capable of avoiding relegation.
Anthony Taylor will referee his first Premier League game of the season today, and Southampton fans will be hoping for a similar scoreline to the last time he was at St Mary's when the club secured promotion back to the top flight on the final day of last season. The official has quietly been building his reputation amongst the elite group of referees, and will be hoping to further impress with a consistent performance here.
Premier League football returns to St Mary's, as Southampton host Wigan looking to pick up their first points of the campaign. The Saints performed admirably against Manchester City last week, but a late winner denied them a share of the spoils. The visitors opened with a defeat at home to Chelsea last time out, but Roberto Martinez will be hoping his side can continue their improvement away from home at the end of last season, which resulted in some major scalps including Liverpool and Arsenal. This is the first time the sides will meet in a League encounter, and it promises to be an entertaining afternoon with two sides who like to play attractive football.
