Start Half

A fine performance and victory for Everton as they spoiled Newcastle's Champions League dream, but the game was again marred by Andre Marriner, who stole the limelight by bizarrely sending off Tim Cahill after the final whistle. Steven Pienaar gave Everton the lead with a deflected shot, before Nikica Jelavic scored his usual goal to see his side take a two goal lead into the break. Newcastle improved in the second half, but it was the the home side who increased their lead with a Johnny Heitinga header. An own goal from Tony Hibbert gave the Magpies a consolation as the Toffees held on to increase their winning run, it is just a shame that Marriner had to make yet another ridiculous decision.
That is the end of the game, but there are some afters between Yohan Cabaye and Tim Cahill. Cahill is then sent off.
Leon Osman gets a chance and beats the keeper with a fine shot, but he sees it rebound off the woodwork.
A sweeping move from left to right from Everton. Then as Leighton Baines tees up Marouane Fellaini there is Mike Williamson to clear.
Darron Gibson gets another shooting chance and this time he sends the ball just wide.
The away team continue to try to get back in this game as they try in vain to keep their Champions League dream alive, but Everton continue to stand firm.
Denis Stracqualursi comes on for new Everton hero Nikica Jelavic.
Darron Gibson hits another decent shot from distance that Tim Krul can`t hold. The ball cannons straight into Tim Cahill and back into the arms of the keeper.
Cheik Tiote, who has been very poor, is replaced by Shola Ameobi.
Demba Ba gets on to a cross to the far post and heads towards goal, but Tim Howard is able to claw the ball away from under his own bar.
Steven Pienaar has been excellent today and flicks the ball over one Newcastle player before running at Ryan Taylor, but the right back stands strong and eventually makes the tackle.
Phil Neville is replaced by Tim Cahill.
Tony Hibbert jumps and tries to cut out a pass, but only succeeds in heading past his own keeper.
Everton back off and allow Yohan Cabaye room to shoot from 30 yards. Tim Howard gets down to save a tricky bouncing shot.
John Heitinga comes off to applause and Sylvain Distin replaces him.
Darron Gibson sends a great cross into the box and there is Johnny Heitinga to head home his first goal of the season.
Papiss Demba Cisse turns the Everton defence, but his finish is weak and Tim Howard can get down to save.
The everton keeper must have a leg injury has Philip Jagielka is now taking goal kicks for Everton.
Everton have a free kick and Darron Gibson hits it from 30 yards, but Tim Krul is easily across to save.
Great play from Leighton Baines until he comes to the cross. The left back only manages to pick out Tim Krul, who is able to set up a counter attack.
Newcastle work the ball across to Ryan Taylor and he hits a volley at goal, but Philip Jagielka is there to block.
The away side have come out fighting in the second half and are pushing Everton back.
Papiss Demba Cisse has an early chance, which he should convert as he leaves Tim Howard on the floor, but he mishits and sends his shot wide.
We are back under way. Alan Pardew has made two changes with Sylvain Marveaux and Ryan Taylor replacing James Perch and Davide Santon.
A fine half for Everton as they dominated a disappointing Newcastle and deservedly grabbed a two goal lead through strikes from Steven Pienaar and Nikica Jelavic. The away side had started better with Tim Howard having to save in the first minute, but since that chance it has all been Everton. Marouane Fellaini has controlled the midfield, whilst Newcastle have struggled to cope with Pienaar's and Leon Osman's runs from deep. Newcastle need to up their game in the second half or their Champions League dream is going to fizzle away.
We are now at the break.
A cynical block from Leighton Baines and he goes into the book.
Newcastle have a free kick wide on the right of the Everton area, but Hatem Ben Arfa opts to shoot and it goes well over.
Papiss Demba Cisse - who has been awful thus far - gets some space on the edge of the box and very nearly grabs a goal with a shot that fizzes past the post.
Darron Gibson gets some space and hits a fine shot. Tim Krul parries before diving on the rebound to deny the waiting Nikica Jelavic.
More fine play from Everton. Nikica Jelavic feeds Leon Osman and the midfielder shows quick feet, but his shot gets deflected wide.
Newcastle get a chance as Jonas Gutierrez gets some room on the edge of the box. The winger turns and curls a shot just wide of the post. A warning for Everton.
The highly rated midfield anchor man is having a poor game and can`t handle the runs of Steven Pienaar. At this rate Cheik Tiote will be lucky to remain on the pitch.
Leighton Baines and Steven Pienaar carve a massive hole in the Newcastle defence. Baines then crosses for Marouane Fellaini, but Tim Krul claims inside the six yard box.
A simple goal. John Heitinga sends a long ball forward, which Nikica Jelavic races on to. Tim Krul saves the first shot, but then Jelavic bounces up and buries the rebound.
The away side have begun to stem the tide a little and are carefully biding their time. The Magpies are not piling forward and seem happy to continue to play their game.
Leighton Baines sends a great free kick in, which Leon Osman steers back across the box for Steven Pienaar. The winger smashes a shot, but it flies into the side netting. It is all Everton at the moment.
More good football for Everton as Leighton Baines and Steven Pienaar combine, but Pienaar's pass into Nikica Jelavic finds the striker offside.
Well, I spoke that up. Marouane Fellaini finds Steven Pienaar and the midfielder drills a wonderful shot past Tim Krul, although it may have taken a slight deflection.
The home side have started well as they stroke the ball about the pitch and keep possession. However, they are yet to really cause Newcastle any trouble at the back.
Marouane Fellaini drifts in between the Newcastle centre backs to race on to Phil Neville's through ball, but his looping header is just past the post.
Andre Marriner halts play after Marouane Fellaini is shoved off the ball and hands Newcastle a free kick. Fellaini is clearly frustrated but the strange decision and is spoken to by the referee.
John Heitinga goes and win a sliding tackle, but Andre Marriner doesn`t see it that way. He hands Newcastle a free kick and books Johnny Heitinga. Nice to see that Marriner continues his series of dodgy decisions against Everton.
Arsenal and Spurs have both taken the lead in their respective games - if those scores remain the same then Newcastle cannot finish higher than fifth.
Leon Osman picks the ball up in an advanced position and looks for the run of Nikica Jelavic, but the pass is too heavy and Tim Krul is able to claim.
Newcastle win an early free kick, which is whipped in by Hatem Ben Arfa. Fabricio Coloccini meets it and Tim Howard is forced to make the save.
The final game of the season is under way.
The Newcastle side practically picks itself at the moment, but with Danny Simpson missing, Alan Pardew is forced to ask James Perch to play right back. Papiss Cissé leads the line.
A massive boost for Everton as Leighton Baines returns to left back after his injury. Sylvain Distin misses out as Phil Jagielka and Johnny Heitinga retain their centre back partnership. Steven Pienaar plays the last game of his loan spell from Spurs.
Andre Marriner has refereed Everton three times this season and the Toffees have not won one of those games. The first of those was the reverse of this fixture, which Newcastle won 2-1. Can Everton beat their Marriner hoodoo?
A win ensures Newcastle of nothing, but they need to do their bit for their long suffering fans and look to at least finish the season on a high. If Magpies fans had been offered fifth place at the start of the season, they would have laughed and shook on it, but now they are so close to third that anything else could feel like failure.
Everton will be looking to end another tumultuous year in relative success with a seventh place finished that looked beyond them for much of the season. The poor form, financial worries and fans protests faded away from January as the Toffees climbed up the league and went on an FA Cup run. Now they just need to win this to ensure they cap the season in the best way they can.
This is no damp squib of a final day encounter as Everton and Newcastle have it all to play for at Goodison Park on an afternoon full of strange coincidence. Newcastle's sights are still set on the Champions League places, but they need a victory at the home of the club who last upset the big spenders - it was seven years ago that a skint Everton clinched fourth and a shot at the big time. Do not expect the Toffees to show any solidarity with the Magpie's quest, David Moyes' men will be looking for a win that clinches seventh place and a finish above Liverpool for the first time in – yup, you guessed it - seven years.
