The excellent Callum McManaman played a starring role as Wigan walloped Huddersfield 4-1 at the John Smith Stadium in the FA Cup fifth round. The Terriers started brightly and went close with headers from Neil Danns and Alan Lee, but soon faded and fell behind when McManaman scurried through to place a shot into the top corner in the 30th minute. Nine minutes later it was two when the winger set up Jordi Gomez, whose shot was saved by Alex Smithies, only for Arouna Kone to convert the rebound. James McArthur scored a cracker from the edge of the box in the 56th minute, but the Terriers pulled one back through substitute Lee Novak's 62nd-minute header. They then pressed forward heroically and came close to scoring again when James Vaughan steered a header narrowly wide, but it was all over in the 89th minute when Anthony Gerrard's mistake allowed Kone to steal in for his second of the match. In the end Premier League class told, but there were some encouraging signs for Huddersfield's new manager. They must now kick on in the league.
It's all over here at the John Smith Stadium as Wigan progress to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.
Novak sets up Vaughan for a late try, the former Everton striker clearing the crossbar by some yards with a rising drive from 20 yards out.
Jamie McCarthy makes a late appearance, with McArthur retiring to the bench.
Anthony Gerrard holds his head in his hands after the defender gifts the ball to AROUNA KONE with an overrun sprint out of defence. The Ivorian can't believe his luck, seizing on the mistake to motor into the area and lash a shot high past Smithies. That's the icing on the cake for Wigan.
A mistake from the too-casual Beausejour allows Danns in, the midfielder failing to find Vaughan with a low cross that Joel gets down to smother.
Novak's cross from the right is tempting for James Vaughan, who, in his eagerness to reach it, fouls Paul Scharner. Time is slipping away from Huddersfield now.
Jean Beausejour overlaps McManaman on the left wing and cuts inside to shoot for the far post, Alex Smithies producing a fine diving save to keep the ball out. Shortly after that McManaman is booked for an over-zealous challenge.
Shaun Maloney and Neil Danns engage in a minor scuffle after the Wigan winger hacks down his opponent. Danns gives Maloney a little shove to the hip, and then there's an unseemly spot of eyeballing. The ref merely tells the errant pair to behave or else.
James Vaughan manages to find Novak in front of goal with a smart forward pass, only for the striker to control loosely and allow Maynor Figueroa to nick the ball away at the last moment.
Wigan replace Gomez with the more defensive Jean Beausejour in an effort to steady the ship.
Jack Hunt sends a delightful cross into the box from deep, Vaughan beating Scharner in the air to nod a header mere inches wide of the left-hand post.
Although time is running out, Huddersfield aren't giving up and continue to swarm up the pitch whenever they win the ball. The crowd are giving them some much-needed vocal support.
McArthur goes in for an aerial challenge with Neil Danns and takes a hefty blow to the head for his troubles. The physios are instantly on the pitch to give the stricken goalscorer treatment.
Mark Robins' third substitution sees Oliver Norwood come on for Scannell.
Out of nowhere the Terriers have grabbed a goal! Callum Woods receives the ball from a throw-in and curls a cross straight onto the head of LEE NOVAK, whose effort punches into the roof of the net. Could there be a way back into this for the hosts?
The first yellow card of the match goes to Vaughan for a wild swing at Fraser Fyvie's leg.
Roberto Martinez replaces the largely ineffective Espinoza with Shaun Maloney.
JAMES MCARTHUR makes it look so easy as the midfielder plays a one-two with Gomez and ambles into the area to drive an unstoppable shot past the diving Smithies. That's surely game over now.
Paul Scharner stoops to awkwardly head a long ball from Huddersfield back to Joel, and for a moment it looks like James Vaughan will reach it, but in the end it trickles through to the Spanish keeper.
Now it's Huddersfield who pass the ball about in style as Wigan chase shadows. Perhaps they could still get back into this.
A terrible piece of play from the visitors sees Stam's ill-advised pass across his own box intercepted by James Vaughan, whose first-time belter of an effort is well saved by the wrong-footed Joel.
Maynor Figueroa comes up with an acrobatic attempt to keep the ball from bouncing out for a corner after blocking Lee Novak's cross, but it had already crossed the line. Clayton heads the resulting corner towards goal but can't generate the power necessary to make it count.
The teams are back out and the second half is underway. Mark Robins has decided to shake things up, introducing Lee Novak for Chris Atkinson and James Vaughan for Alan Lee.
Wigan haven't had to break stride in the first half of this FA Cup fifth-round tie, Huddersfield having struggled manfully only to come up short so far. The Terriers have had no answer to the brilliance of Callum McManaman, the winger scoring the first of Wigan's goals and creating the second. That opening goal came in the 31st minute when James McArthur's top-notch through ball sent the youngster scurrying through to place a shot into the top corner, and it was followed up nine minutes after, McManaman making the byline to pull the ball back for Jordi Gomez. The Spaniard's shot was well saved by Alex Smithies, only for Arouna Kone to tuck away the rebound. Huddersfield started brightly, threatening with headers from Neil Danns and Alan Lee, but faded as the half wore on and must rally at half time if they want to stay in this competition.
It's half time here at the John Smith Stadium, where Wigan lead Huddersfield by two goals to nil.
James McArthur very nearly makes a fatal mistake for the second time in the game as the Scot inexplicably checks his jump under Woods' cross. As a result the ball very nearly runs to Neil Danns, whose stretch at the back post isn't enough to turn the chance home.
Wigan now attack down the opposite flank as Ronnie Stam overlaps to swing in a cross. It falls kindly for Espinoza, who brings groans from the travelling fans with an awful touch. Gerrard boots it clear.
McArthur and McManaman combine again to send the latter surging down the left, reaching the byline to pull the ball back for Jordi Gomez. The Spaniard's sidefooted effort from six yards draws a fantastic save from Smithies, whose face falls as AROUNA KONE buries the rebound from point-blank range.
Espinoza senses the chance to have a pop as the home defence stands off the Honduran, and he duly goes for goal from 25 yards. The looped effort, however, is way over the crossbar.
Wigan have the wind in their sails following that goal and are now pressing hard for a second. Huddersfield need to regroup quickly to avoid going under.
James McArthur's clever pass sends CALLUM MCMANAMAN scampering through, the game's outstanding performer so far evading the lunge of Clarke to place the ball beyond Alex Smithies and into the top corner. An excellent strike.
The Latics have survived an early buffeting by their lower-league challengers and are now teasing the sting from the match. The ball is starting to zip between the black shirts at some pace.
Some excellent hold-up play from Roger Espinoza grants McManaman a yard of space, and the youngster bursts into the area to place a low ball right across the face of goal. Nobody is on hand to apply the finishing touch.
A free kick from Callum Woods sails above everybody in the area and trickles out for a goal kick. That was a waste of an opportunity to pile the pressure on Wigan.
James McArthur puts hearts in Wigan mouths with an ill-advised interception that sends Lee haring after a loose ball in behind the defence. Fortunately for McArthur, Roman Golobart reacts with terrific speed to reach it ahead of his opponent.
The hosts are looking dangerous in the air; this time Woods' cross finds the leaping Alan Lee, who beats Figueroa to it but succeeds only in steering his effort over the bar.
Fraser Fyvie appeals for a penalty as the Scot attempts to flick the ball past Peter Clarke inside the penalty area. It clearly hit the bemused centre back's chest, a fact with which the ref instantly agrees.
Adam Clayton fells Roger Espinoza with a late tackle that, were it committed any later in the game, would surely have earned the midfielder a booking. As it is the ref merely dispenses a stern talking-to.
Callum Woods glances up from a deep position on the left wing and swings in a cross to the back post. Neil Danns leaps above Maynor Figueroa but can't keep the header on target.
Callum McManaman turns his man inside-out down the left and hangs up a cross that Jordi Gomez heads onto the roof of the net under pressure from Anthony Gerrard.
The two sides have lived up to expectations so far; Huddersfield are eager to knock the ball upfield and quick to close their opponents down, while Wigan are retaining their composure to calmly pass the ball back and forth.
The referee blows the whistle to get our slice of FA Cup action underway here at the John Smith Stadium.
Mark Robins has chosen Alan Lee to lead the line in his first team selection, while Sean Scannell lines up in midfield.
As expected, Roberto Martinez has handed out some rare starts to little-used players. Joel plays in goal, while Roman Golobart, Callum McManaman and Fraser Fyvie make the starting line-up.
The Latics are likely to include several fringe players, but could have Ryo Miyaichi, Emmerson Boyce, Antolin Alcaraz and Adrian Lopez available after recovering from injury.
Alex Smithies returns after suffering a family bereavment, while Peter Clarke and Neil Danns are both available for selection.
Wigan boss Roberto Martinez has made a positive report from the team's trip to sunnier climes. The Wigan players attended a training camp in Tenerife this week, and Martinez has spoken of the valuable time spent working with the players around the clock. Unsurprisingly he didn't mention the outcry over photos showing key players lounging around the pool.
Today's match will be Mark Robins' first game in charge of Huddersfield, having left Coventry City to take charge of the Terriers on Thursday. Steve Taylor has arrived to operate as Robins' assistant, the pair replacing the sacked Simon Grayson, who went 12 league games without a win before his eventual dismissal. Huddersfield's new 43-year-old boss is seen in the game as possessing some serious talent; let's see what he can do today.
When it comes to the league Huddersfield Town are not enjoying the best of seasons, but the Championship strugglers have a real opportunity to spring an FA Cup upset today as they come up against a Wigan Athletic side most likely shorn of their top performers. Latics boss Roberto Martinez has indicated that he plans to give several fringe players a chance in this afternoon's fifth-round clash at the John Smith's Stadium. That could present an opening for Mark Robins' side, who will be full of confidence after dispatching Championship high-flyers Leicester in Tuesday's fourth-round replay. As this is the FA Cup, they'll be in the mood to take on and possibly even kill some Premier League giants.
