Having knocked out Premier League opposition in the last round, Luton Town fans were optimistic that they could cause another FA Cup upset in their fifth-round tie against Millwall today. The Lions were given a hostile welcome by the Kenilworth Road crowd but any anxiety was delat with when Hatters defender Janos Kovacs' slip allowed James Henry to give the Championship side an early lead. Andre Gray and Arnaud Mendy had decent opportunities to level but failed to do so, meaning Rob Hulse's neat finish just before half-time was a hammer blow to their ambitions. Despite putting all four of their strikers on the pitch in the second half, Kenny Jackett's men dealt with everything that the home side threw at them. Dany N'Guessan added gloss to the victory in the final moments of the match and Millwall deservedly advance to the quarter-finals. As for Luton Town, they can focus their attentions on making a push for the Blue Square Bet Premier play-offs.
It's all over. This FA Cup fifth round match has finished Luton Town 0 Millwall 3.
Luton get a late corner kick and the ball falls to Jon Shaw but the striker's goal-bound effort is cleared off the line. Shaw has another opportunity moments later but can't connect with a header.
Four minutes of added time will be played at Kenilworth Road but this match is all but over. The only thing left to fight for, as far as Luton are concerned, is pride. Stuart Fleetwood tries to restore some with a 40-yard drive but the shot is wildly off target.
The visitors are going to make a substitution late on. James Henry is coming off for Adam Smith as Luton prepare to take a corner kick. Alex Lawless puts his delviery into a good area but, like they have all day, the Millwall defence deals with it with ease.
Millwall are cruising into the quarter-finals. Liam Trotter feeds John Marquis inside the Luton penalty area. Marquis shoots at goal and Mark Tyler initially saves his effort but then lets it run free. Dany N'Guessan is alert and pounces to poke the loose ball into the back of the net.
It's in and it's game over. Dany N'Guessan puts Millwall three up.
It's time for the aerial bombardment from Luton now, who have four strikers to aim for inside the Millwall penalty area. That hasn't helped them create any more chances so far though and the visitors look very comfortable with their two-goal advantage.
Luton defender Jake Howell's corner is headed away by Karleigh Osborne but only as far as Alex Lawless. The midfielder is 30 yards from goal but takes the ball down on his chest before driving it back at David Forde. It's off target though and Millwall can breathe again.
Millwall's Andy Keogh almost secures the victory on two occasions. First, he's denied by an excellent Mark Tyler save. Then he is unmarked at the back post to latch on to a James Henry cross but he heads the ball into the ground and wide for a goal kick. The Lions should be out of sight.
After some slick build-up play, Luton nearly get Scott Rendell in behind the Millwall defence but the striker is ruled offside after receiving a pass from Jon Shaw. The Kenilworth Road faithful show their appreciation for the style of football but time is running out for their team.
Kenny Jackett decides to freshen up his attacking line by withdrawing Rob Hulse for John Marquis. Hulse has had an excellent game for the visitors and rounded that off with a very well-taken goal.
Millwall get another chance to add to their lead as Dany N'Guessan launches a counter attack. He passes to James Henry who chips the ball across to Rob Hulse but Luton do enough to snuff out the danger. Luton manager Paul Buckle makes another substitution, withdrawing Arnaud Mendy for Jon Shaw. Luton now have four strikers on the pitch.
Millwall get an opening when Liam Trotter rolls the ball to James Henry, 20 yards from the Luton goal. Henry opens his body up and attempts to curl a shot into the opposite corner but puts his effort over. Moments later, Mark Tyler is forced to spread himself at Andy Keogh's feet when the Irish international is about to get a shot away from six yards out. Under pressure, Keogh also blazes the ball over the bar.
Luton Town are also going to make their first substitution, bringing off Jonathan O'Donnell for Stuart Fleetwood in a very attacking move. It looks like the home side are going to play three up front for the remainder of this game.
Luton are continuing to pressure and harass Millwall but the Lions are doing well to cope with their opponents at the moment. The home side need a goal soon if they're going to make this a nervy finish. Meanwhile Dany N'Guessan replaces Liam Feeney for Kenny Jackett's men.
Andy Keogh tries his chances from 35 yards out on the half-volley but the Millwall striker's drive is hooked a long way wide of Mark Tyler's goal, much to the enjoyment of the Luton supporters.
Luton's Jake Howells delivers a corner kick into the Millwall area. He finds the towering figure of Janos Kovacs, who beats his marker in the air but heads narrowly over the bar. The Hatters are going to give this a go.
Luton striker Scott Rendell goes into the book for over-remonstrating after protesting against a foul on Millwall right-back Alan Dunne. Moments later, Andre Gray races on to a through ball but David Forde races out to snuff out the danger.
It looks like Mark Beevers and Shane Lowry wrestle Scott Rendell to the ground deep inside the Millwall half but Lee Probert opts not to give a free-kick, much to the derision of the home faithful.
The first chance of the half falls to Millwall's Mark Beevers who leaps above Scott Rendell to get his head on a James Henry free-kick but puts the ball high over the bar.
Luton have chosen not to make any changes to their side at half-time but they do have options on the bench if Paul Buckle does decide to turn to his substitutes. Both Stuart Fleetwood and Jon Shaw will be a threat to the Millwall defence, if introduced.
We're back underway in this FA Cup fifth round match. Can Luton Town turn this around or will Millwall see off any Hatters push to advance to the quarter-finals of the competition?
There was a raucous atmosphere at Kenilworth Road prior to kick-off which made this FA Cup fifth round match a daunting prospect for visiting Millwall of the Championship. However when Luton defender Janos Kovacs slipped, allowing James Henry to round Mark Tyler in the Hatters goal and finish, the home crowd was stunned. Luton had chances to equalise through Andre Gray and Arnaud Mendy, the latter of whom was denied in spectacular fashion by David Forde, but they were made to pay just before half-time. Rob Hulse misdirected his initial header but recovered to loop the ball into the back of Luton's net to double Millwall's lead. It's a long way back for the non-league team now, who must throw caution to the wind if they are to pull off another cup upset.
That's half-time at Kenilworth Road. Millwall lead Luton Town 2-0 at the interval, thanks to goals from James Henry and Rob Hulse.
Andre Gray wins a corner for the home side late in the first half. Jake Howells picks out Janos Kovacs but the Hungarian defender can't direct the ball into the back of the net and Millwall can clear.
Luton's Janos Kovacs is enduring a miserable day so far and dawdles on the ball again to allow Andy Keogh to win a throw-in against the odds. He's receiving some stick from the home supporters at the moment.
Millwall's Karleigh Osborne bundles over Andre Gray to give Luton Town a good chance from a set piece. The visitors clear the danger but Rob Hulse gets a whack to the head for his efforts. He needs treatment but is back on his feet soon enough.
Millwall's James Henry is the provider this time, standing a cross up to the back post for Rob Hulse. Hulse can't direct his header towards goal and the ball goes behind him instead, but the on-loan Queens Park Rangers man turns his body well, before lobbing the ball over Mark Tyler and into the goal. It's his first goal for the Lions and it's a really clever finish.
It's in again for Millwall! Rob Hulse with the goal!
Luton are getting good territorial position again in recent moments. First, Alex Lawless swings his foot at the ball from 20 yards but can't connect, before Jonathan Smith lines a shot up on the angle from a similar distance but balloons his effort out of the ground.
Millwall's James Henry shows tenacity down the left flank which allows him to aim a cross into the Luton box towards Rob Hulse. Hulse decides to try a spectacular acrobatic attempt but loops the ball well over the bar.
Luton forward Andre Gray has been the brightest player on the pitch so far and nearly gets another chance to shoot at the Millwall goal. The livewire attempts to turn Karleigh Osborne on the edge of the Lions' box but puts too much on his flick and the ball rolls out for a goal kick.
The last few minutes have been the quietest period of the games so far as both teams battle for possession in midfield. The pitch at Kenilworth Road isn't in fantastic condition to say the least, which is causing players from both sides to struggle to get the ball under control on occasion - something which Janos Kovacs may point to for the opening goal.
What a save! Ronnie Henry heads a free-kick back across goal for Luton allowing Arnaud Mendy to lash the ball at goal. His shot is on target but David Forde pulls off an excellent point-blank save to deny the Hatters an equaliser.
Luton react well as Jake Howells and then Arnaud Mendy have efforts from the edge of the Millwall area but the first attempt is blocked and the second is directed behind for a corner kick, which comes to nothing.
It's a disaster for Luton defender Janos Kovacs, who can't control the ball, allowing James Henry to steal it off the Hungarian, who is last man. Kovacs slides in to try and dispossess him but can't, leaving Henry to round Mark Tyler and slide the ball into the back of the net.
It's in! Millwall take the lead at Kenilworth Road through James Henry!
It's a really lively, end-to-end start to this game with both sides happy to play an open game. We've had our first aggressive head-to-head to as Andrew Keogh and Jonathan Smith have a disagreement. Referee Lee Probert has a word with the pair but doesn't hand out any further punishment.
Luton get their first real chance when Andre Gray brushes off Karleigh Osbourne on the right side before striking the ball at goal from a tight angle. David Forde pushes the ball behind for a corner, which comes to nothing.
What a chance for the visitors. Rob Hulse gets in behind the Luton defence and attempts to slide the ball past goalkeeper Mark Tyler but scuffs his shot past the far post and out for a goal kick.
Millwall have been the better side in the early stages inside an extremely loud Kenilworth Road but there have been no real chances for either side early on. Luton's Andre Gray has the first half-chance but his shot, on the swivel, is easily saved by David Forde.
Referee Lee Probert gets this FA Cup fifth round tie underway at Kenilworth Road. Can Luton Town become the first non-league team to make it through to the quarter-final stage since 1914 or will Millwall avoid an upset against the underdogs?
Luton Town go with Scott Rendell and Andre Gray up front, relegating Jon Shaw to the bench. Meanwhile, Millwall bring in Andy Keogh and Liam Feeney for Benik Afobe and Martyn Woolford as expected. Defender Danny Shittu is out through injury meaning that Karleigh Osborne slots into the centre of defence alongside Mark Beevers.
David Forde, Alan Dunne, Karleigh Osborne, Mark Beevers, Shane Lowry, James Henry, Nadjim Abdou, Liam Trotter, Liam Feeney, Rob Hulse, Andy Keogh. Bench: Maik Taylor, Adam Smith, Jake Goodman, Josh Wright, Scott Malone, Dany N'Guessan, John Marquis.
Mark Tyler, Greg Taylor, Ron Henry, Janos Kovacs, Jake Howells, Alex Lawless, Jonathan Smith, Arnaud Mendy, Jonathan O'Donnell, Andre Gray, Scott Rendell. Bench: Dean Brill, Jon Shaw, Stuart Fleetwood, Ed Asafu-Adjaye, Matt Robinson, Jake Wooley, Brett Longden.
Lee Probert is the man in the middle today and he will be in charge of controlling this potentially feisty fixture. The 40-year-old has officiated in three cup matches so far this season and Luton will be hoping for a similar outcome today to two of the matches, where there were upsets - Brighton & Hove Albion beating Newcastle United in the third round with Oldham Athletic beating Liverpool in the fourth round.
The last time these two teams met at Kenilworth Road was in February 2008 when they played out a 1-1 draw in a League One fixture. Paul Furlong opened the scoring for the Hatters before Lewis Grabban equalised for Millwall. The Lions finished mid-table that season but Luton, decimated by a ten-point deduction for entering administration, were relegated to League Two.
Millwall will also have to make do without players due to them being cup-tied. Benik Afobe and Martyn Woolford have played for Bolton Wanderers and Bristol City respectively in the competition so far. Former Wolves striker Andy Keogh should lead the line for Kenny Jackett's side in place of Afobe while Liam Feeney will come in for Woolford. Striker Nathan Tyson will have been keen to start this much-anticipated match but he will miss out through injury, as will winger Chris Taylor.
With a number of their recent signings cup-tied, Luton Town are likely to call upon the same set of players that got them to the fifth round of the FA Cup. Midfielders Scott Neilson and Dave Martin as well as defenders Steve McNulty and Simon Ainge have represented other teams in this year's competition, meaning that they will miss the match. Full-back Lathaniel Rowe-Turner will also have to watch from the stands after he was sent off in the Hatters' 1-0 defeat at Barrow earlier in the month. He is serving a three-match suspension. Top scorer Scott Rendell may struggle to force his way into Paul Buckle's starting XI with Jon Shaw and Andre Gray also vying for a place up front.
When Luton Town and Millwall were drawn out of the hat to face each other in the FA Cup fifth round, officials from both clubs probably had their heads in their hands. The last time these two sides met in the cup was in a quarter-final in 1985, which sparked the infamous Kenilworth Road riot. Hopefully there will be no repeat of those scenes today as this is set to be a cracking cup tie. The Hatters became the first non-league team ever to knock Premier League opposition out of the competition when they beat Norwich City in the last round but have been in uninspiring form since. But Millwall, too, are out of form - losing each of their last three league matches since knocking Aston Villa out of the cup. This should be a real battle on the pitch - but hopefully not off it.
